The Boom In Colorado: Colorado Springs Bombing Draws Attention, National President

Published on

Most people associate strained race relations and hate crimes with the South. So you can only imagine how surprising it was when reports surfaced that a pipe bomb explosion outside the Colorado Springs, CO NAACP branch office was, in fact, being investigated by the FBI as a hate crime. I’d been following the story closely since it broke so I jumped at the chance to write about the investigation. I had the opportunity to cover national NAACP President and CEO Cornell William Brooks’ visit to the area for NBC News and The Crisis Magazine. I also interviewed local chapter president Henry D. Allen, Jr. and other dignitaries at the event that kicked off his trip. I later contributed to a follow-up report once a suspect was taken into custody. Investigators are still trying to get to the bottom of the motive for the crime. One thing’s for certain is that this story will be one with many updates. Stay tuned!
